Alex is a young boy who has an obsession with space. After watching the launch of Apollo 11 launch he dreams that he too can someday go to space. Growing up in mid-western America in the 60s, Alex has been raised Catholic and taught to believe in God and heaven. He is learning, growing, and trying to understand, and has questions about where space goes and where heaven is. These questions become even more complicated when Alex overhears his mother, Paula, talking about an illness that has been previously hidden from Alex. Due to her developing illness, Paula's own faith has begun to waiver, and she struggles to hide her deteriorating health from her son as well as answer his questions that she doesn't know how to answer for herself. As the story unfolds Alex becomes increasingly disorientated between the reality of what is happening and his dreams, blurring his sense of hope and bewilderment of the possibilities of space exploration.
